The Crown Colliery on Hedworth Lane in Boldon Colliery reopened on Wednesday 30th October following a transformational investment of £190,000. The pub is part of Proper Pubs, the award-winning community wet-led operator division of Admiral Taverns, which has more than 200 pubs across England, Scotland and Wales.
Inside, the pub has undergone a full refurbishment to refresh the overall look and feel throughout. This included updating the flooring as well as installing brand new furniture, fixtures, fittings and lighting to give the pub a brighter, more modernised atmosphere. In addition, The Crown Colliery features a brand-new audio system along with five flat screen televisions complete with Sky Sports, TNT Sports and horse racing channels. Outside, the beer garden has been revamped to create a welcoming space for customers to enjoy all year round.
To celebrate the reopening, the pub hosted a live performance from local glam rock legend, Micky Glamz, on Wednesday 30th October, with entertainment continuing throughout the weekend.
The Crown Colliery offers a wide range of drinks offers, including Wine Wednesday, where customers can get £2 off a bottle, Fizz Friday, offering customers a bottle of fizz for £10, along with cocktails, bottle and shot deals throughout the week.
Bev Wareham, Operator at The Crown Colliery said: “We had a brilliant opening weekend, and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to celebrate with everyone! We have already received a great reception from customers and local residents, and we look forward to cementing the pub at the heart of the community.”
I would like to thank absolutely everybody who came along to celebrate with us at the weekend, as well as the team at Proper Pubs for all their support in helping me bring my vision to life.”
On top of the fantastic drink selection, The Crown Colliery runs a busy schedule of entertainment including regular karaoke, live music, quiz nights and DJ sets as well as hosting regular pool and darts teams to bring customers together.
Going forward, Bev also hopes to introduce frequent fundraising events for causes close to both her, and the community’s, heart with a particular focus on supporting those who have been affected by cancer.
Matthew Gurney, Operations Director for Proper Pubs, said: “The refurbishment at The Crown Colliery looks amazing and it’s been a pleasure seeing what a success opening weekend was. Bev, and the whole team, worked incredibly hard to get everything ready and in perfect condition so it’s fantastic to see how much the community is already enjoying the pub.”
“On behalf of everybody at Proper Pubs, I would like to wish our community hero, Bev, every success in making The Crown Colliery a fantastic hub of the community.”
Proper Pubs is always looking for ways to support its communities through an annual schedule of events and fundraising initiatives. In March, it was crowned Community Pub Operator at the Publican Awards, and more recently raised nearly £100,000 in just three months for various local charities across the UK. In September 2024, the Group successfully donated enough food to local foodbanks across the UK to feed 1,300 people for a week and has also been recognised for its UK-wide defibrillator installation campaign which has already saved 11 lives.
This year, operators across Proper Pubs’ estate are collecting as many advent calendars as possible to donate to local charities and communities in need.
